Because Congress failed to approve a 2014 federal budget, the IRS has curtailed its operations.
If you have a question, do not bother contacting the IRS. The IRS website states that no customer service will be available and IRS walk-in assistance centers are closed.
If you have a scheduled tax audit, meeting with a revenue officer, follow up call with ACS or the Taxpayer Advocate, your meeting is cancelled. The IRS website states that personnel will reschedule those meetings at a later date.
During the government shutdown, the IRS reports that automated IRS notices will continue to be mailed.
Despite the shutdown, the IRS instructs all taxpayers on its websites that taxpayers should continue to meet their tax obligations. That means, despite the government shutdown, if you’re in an IRS installment, you must continue to make payments, if you had an offer in compromise accepted, you must continue to stay compliant, if you have employees you must make all federal tax deposits and file payroll tax returns for the third quarter on October 31, 2013, if you’re on an extension, you must file your individual tax returns on October 15, 2013.
The failure to timely file and timely pay your income or payroll taxes can result the failure to file, failure to pay, and failure to deposit penalties being assessed inclusive of statutory interest thereon. Tax penalties can be financially damaging to a taxpayer. Therefore, it is important that you stay compliant. At some point, the IRS will maintain normal operations and the failure to timely file and timely pay will result in IRS bank account levies, wage garnishments, seizures, and criminal tax exposure.
